Mercy Associates - Celebration of 20 years

First Published: 19 July 2017

“I lift my eyes to the mountains – where is my help to come from?

My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth…….”

Psalm 121 - A Song of Ascents.

How many times in the last twenty years have we lifted our eyes to the mountain, climbed the mountain to rest beside the well and drink deeply from its waters of mercy, kindness, compassion, justice, support, and love - waters that flow from the nourishment of word and worship that we feast on in scripture, in Catherine’s words and the words of those who follow this same path – looking for the stillness. “ - Opening words from the address given by Robyn Hunt at the celebration to mark the 20th Anniversary of the Mercy Associates within the Sisters of Mercy Brisbane Congregation.

The celebration included a Liturgy and a meal attended by Mercy Associates, Sisters of Mercy who have journeyed with them across those twenty years, and representatives of the Congregation Leadership Team. Sixteen women and men made their commitment as Mercy Associates in the presence of the then Congregation Leader, Monica Stallard rsm in September 1997.   Over the twenty years sixty one people have made a commitment as an Associate of the Brisbane Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy.

In her Reflection during the Liturgy, Teresa Collins, inspired her fellow Associates with the words “When people like us are dedicated to serving God in the ordinary, everyday things in life, the smile at a stranger, being the listening ear, the phone call you make to someone just at the right time, God can do the extraordinary things He wants, because we are ready, willing and able to be His servants.

So, let us keep on doing what we are doing, even if it feels like it doesn’t count, because God takes the ordinary things and can make them extraordinary. Our job is to be faithful, to be consistent on our journey as Mercy Associates and Sisters of Mercy and leave it for God and His purposes to make the ordinary things extraordinary”.
